About Us

I'm Jennifer, mom to three, and owner of this site. Sometime in the summer of 2000, I met a Canadian mother who'd just had her first baby here in Taipei. She wanted to put together an informational booklet on having a baby in Taipei, and I offered to help. I'd just learned I was pregnant, and was anxious about choosing a hospital, my lack of Mandarin skills, and whether or not I could find a doctor who would support my desire for a relaxed, drug-free, natural birth with few interventions. I thought it would be a good chance to get the information I needed, as well as share what I'd learned from my previous two births.

We came oh-so-close to printing, but to make a long story short, we both became busy with other priorities--Paula with motherhood and a new job, myself with a new baby. However, I continued to receive calls and emails from expectant women looking for information on childbirth in Taipei.

I continued keeping notes of what I thought women and parents would find useful, and then with a lot of encouragement from my friend Kristy, put my first pages up in March 2002.

Is this a money-making venture? No, it is a community site with information that I think might be useful to foreigners and English-speaking families in Taipei. Any ads you see are here more for color than for profit. The same is true of the Amazon ads, except that those are also a way of featuring books that I (or my friends) recommend highly.

If you happen to see ads for local, mother-owned, or woman-owned businesses, they are completely free, as my way of supporting mothers and women in business.

At the moment, I do all of the maintenance here, but also get lots of help from Kristy, who shares ideas, checks links, finds fun holidays for our calendar, and tries to get me to get stuff done on time. However, the goal is to have other mothers submit articles, poetry, and birth stories, as well as moderate discussions, organize outings, etc.

I hope you find something to interest you here and invite you to sign up for the mailing list and also join us on the Message Board.

If you'd like more information on the site, the best way to contact me is by email.  You can click here to send me a message, and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.
